Lady Anandi is a documentary theatre performance by Anuja Ghosalkar. A female actor, is haunted by the ghost of her great grandfather—a female impersonator in late 19th C Marathi theatre—every time she goes up on stage. It is the story of two actors separated by 100 years, one who plays a lady convincingly and the other, struggling to be a woman on stage.
It has had over 50 shows across India, Sweden & Germany. Its DIY aesthetic enables it to be showcased at varied spaces — an old film studio, a museum of modern art, a basement, a classroom, a brewery, an under-construction office, to name a few.
Anuja Ghosalkar is a Bangalore based artist. She is the founder of Drama Queen, a Documentary theatre company, that focusses on personal histories & archival absences to extend the idea of theatre to create audacious work. Drama Queen’s debut show, Lady Anandi was written while she was an artist-in-residence at Art Lab Gnesta, Sweden.
